CATBALOGAN CITY, Samar, March 28 (PIA) –The Gawad Kalinga Bayani Challenge has transformed this rustic Dinagan barangay into a bustling community.
Since March 23 with the opening of the GK Bayani Challenge, Dinagans (part of Calbayog) have never seen so much visitors.
“Sobra pa hin fiesta san kadamo san tawo ngan mga buruhaton,” (The number of people here now far exceeds the number of guests and events during fiestas.)Barangay Chairman Felecisimo Daguman told this writer in an interview.
While most young people have planned vacation trips to summer getaways, some 500 young people from Eastern Visayas opted to serve farming communities in the remote barangays of Calbayog.
Barangay Dinagan played host to these young Gawad Kalinga volunteers who helped in the different services offered by Gawad Kalinga through its Bayani Challenge.
Bayani Challenge is a gathering of volunteers where they give their best to work together toward love for country and caring for the poor through building homes, repairing schools, health missions, tree planting, environment clean up and activities with the kids.
The volunteers have made decorations of flaglets and banderetas along the streets to simulate a fiesta.
Tents from the volunteers have been put up in the barangay outskirts with portalets for their needs, water purifier from the city government and two times a day ration of water from the city fire station.
The volunteers also spread out to Barangays Amampaacang, Mabini, Rizal Dos, Lungsob and Oquendo doing schoolbuild, community health services, tree planting and farm build activities.
