Yesterday at the Mango cook-off I ended up entering my entry. I didn’t want to do it because when I was preparing it, I burned part of it. Hey! I’m not a cook. I was doing 3 things at once and I let the bread grill too long.
I guess I can tell you what it was that I entered now. It was grilled peanut butter and banana sandwiches.
Some of y’all may be laughing, but I got 2nd place (again). In fact, both the regular cooks at Mango preferred my entry to the others. The other entries were chicken n’ dumplings (homemade), Some kind of chicken/vegetable curry (homemade), corn dogs (store bought) and mine (homemade). One of the cooks didn’t want to try mine at first. I guess she doesn’t like to try anything new. (I don’t either). When she finally did, she said it was delicious. Chicken n’ dumplings won with 5 votes (including mine) and my entry had 3 votes. Only 1 vote for the chicken curry (the cook) and zero for the corn dogs (not even the purchaser).
So, the chicken n’ dumpling will be added to the menu. The thing is though, Christian liked the chicken curry and thinks he can improve on it, so it might get to the menu also. Plus, he says he can make the corn dogs from scratch, using the good New Yorker hot dogs. Those might make the menu also. Last, but not least, a couple of weeks ago Christian was talking about making a dessert menu. That is the reason I brought my entry by, for everyone to taste only (although I originally wanted to enter it, before I burnt some of the bread). The staff liked mine a lot, so it might find its way to the menu also. Plus, Christian said he could make mine better, and I interrupted him and said, “with cinnamon”? He said, “could be, but I was thinking powdered sugar. I wanted to put cinnamon on mine, but I didn’t have any because I didn’t think about it until too late. The new menu should be out next week, so we’ll see what he decides to do.
The winner, a retired Marine, won and received P800 credit at Mango. The other P800 collected (plus another P3k more donated) will be added to our Expat Fund.
Speaking of the Expat Fund. We still need to select a board and decide “exactly” how/when the money will be distributed when/if necessary. I think Christian will be Treasurer (maybe Treasurer/Secretary, but I think better if separated) and they are going to try to vote me in as Chairperson/President. That’s just my feeling on it right now. No one has said anything, but, knowing these guys, that will be what they do. Not that they are lazy, far from it, but the way they think (I think). Whatever happens, I’ll let you know after it does.
